3D Television

It seems 3D television has become the new fad before it has even come out of the box. But are we really ready for 3D TV? Personally, I don’t think we are for some very good reasons.

The first of those reasons is cost. A 3D enabled television will run you anywhere from $3,000 to $12,000. Now I don’t know about you, but there’s no way I’m ever going to pay $12,000 for a television unless it does my laundry, washes my dishes, and helps my kids with their homework at the same time. $12,000 is a down payment on a home! And yes, I know it’s a luxury item and I know luxury costs. But $12,000? C’mon! For $12,000, my entire family will come to your home and put on a play. You can’t get any more 3D than that!

All kidding aside, the cost of these things couldn’t come at a worse time. Not only are we right in the middle of a recession, we recently went through a forced upgrade. Remember it was just a few months back that all television programming switched from analog to digital. For some, the move was a simple matter of shelling out 80 bucks for a small device. Others had to buy whole new televisions. Let’s hope 3D TV doesn’t become the new norm for all television viewing and we’re forced into another upgrade. I’m still getting used to the eerie reality emanating from my new HD set!

Speaking of eeriness, 3D TV doesn’t really give us what we all want and crave from television, which is a break from reality. There’s a certain comfort in knowing what we see on TV isn’t real, but that comfort is breached with 3D TV. Can you imagine watching your favorite crime show or scary movie in 3D? How about the news, a talk show, or awards ceremony? I’m not really comfortable with seeing Friday the 13th’s ax swinging my way after a hard day at work. Nor am I comfortable with my children seeing a 3D wardrobe malfunction at half-time.

I know, I know, some of you are saying 3D television isn’t for everyone and if I don’t like it, I shouldn’t buy it. And you’re right. I certainly won’t buy one any time soon. My main concern is that people may rush into this fad without taking the issues described above to heart. Instead of encouraging corporate competition over technology that isn’t quite perfected yet, we should ask ourselves, what type of generation will we create from this new technology? What will people come to expect after interest in 3D television dissolves? What will be the new thrill and how will people seek it?

Everything we do has a consequence, and I’m really concerned about what the outcome will be. I suppose the only way to find out is to be patient and observe how yester-year’s tv generation adapts to this phenomenon – myself excluded, of course.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Spartacus: Blood and Sand – simply has to have been the best thing on TV for an age…! The first series has had everything – made much in a similar style to 300 - there’s violence, plenty of it, loads of sex, intrigue, emotion and a fantastic series of Machiavellian twists and turns in the plot.

And, of course lets not forget the eye candy – plenty for both guys and girls – and some gay friends (as you’ll understand when you see it if you haven’t already), are rather taken with it too. Lawless (formerly Xena and D’Anna in Battlestar Galactica) is as horny as ever. John Hannah as the devious Batiatus for me has hit the peak of his career – his portrayal of the character is the best I’ve ever seen him. I’m sure there’s some out there who would hate it – if they do, they are fools and don’t know what they are missing. It’s a work of television genius!

Now for the sad part: We’ve looked forward to this show all week throughout it’s run ans imply can’t wait for the second series which has now been unfortunately postponed as the actor who plays Spartacus – Andy Whitfield – has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Get well soon Andy, we need you, and Spartacus back on our screens!

For the first time ever in the UK this week, the candidates for prime-minister from the three leading parties held a televised debate – in much the same style as the presidential debates in America. If the photograph below is anything to go by – it would seem that a certain Mr Nick Brett was less than impressed by the Conservative leader, David Cameron…

The picture is a still from British television who were showing the live feedback on a Facebook page – so appeared all over Britain – on screen – for about 5 seconds.

I’ll bet someone at the TV company was hauled over the coals the following day!

Woman of the week – Teri Hatcher

We recently featured Eva Longoria as our woman of the week – she to my mind was by far the hottest of the cast of Desperate Housewives…

Teri Hatcher has to be running a close second. Most of us would have first noticed her in The New Adventures of Superman which first came to our screens back in 1993! Yes, it really was that long ago! And, she seemed a natural choice for a ‘hot housewife’ when Desperate Housewives appeared.

She hit the headlines in 2006 when she told of being abused as a child, and helped with the conviction of her uncle on four counts child molestation after one of his later victims – a fourteen year old girl committed suicide. It’s a terrible shame she couldn’t have got him earlier – but having lived with someone who was abused as a child I understand the issue is often far from as simple as it looks. At least he had to face what he had done in the end – and thankfully he has since died in prison – so will never have the opportunity to do it again. Good for you Teri…!
